Artist's Description

This is a dramatic moment in casting. The arc furnace has heated the steel to almost 3000 degrees, and the batch has passed the metallurgic tests. The crane man lowers the ladle into a big pit in front of the furnace, and the whole furnace is tipped to pour the white hot metal into the ladle. The Melter is directing the crane man from his booth, as the ladle man and assistant wait for their duties when the ladle is raised. I like how the supervisor planted himself with arms crossed, watching the whole scene with pride.

I see my art quilts as impressions of place – real or imagined. I like to include items discarded by humans as a kind of archeological thumbprint. An object discarded or lost might merge with pages of timeworn books or sheet music, or swatches of rescued embroidery, linens or clothing. Along with “found images” and fabrics they are reborn in a stitched story about human imprints on the earth, evidence of new and old secrets there to be discovered or imagined. I am a Juried Artist Member (JAM) of Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA). I have been sewing since I was 13, and was a painter before turning to art quilts.
