These are paintings I did for McConway and Torley, a foundry in Pittsburgh, PA. They capture key elements in the process of pouring steel into molds and making railroad couplers and other fittings. I worked with supervision and key workers involved in the process, learning from them every step of the way. Mostly I made sketches and took reference photos on the factory floor, and completed the paintings in my studio. I brought them into work several times to check with the workers, and make sure the details were accurate. The entire process took about nine months.
